Interiors: Create a calm oasis in your house

The hustle and the bustle and the nonstop activities of the holidays are over. It's time for peace and quiet. But how do we do that when we have constant noise from television, iPod music, traffic and noisy people? Going to a spa for a week would work but that wouldn't be a permanent solution. Let's see how we can turn our homes into a quiet retreat.

Start with calming colors. Blue is one of those colors that calms and relaxes. Painting walls in some shade of blue will start the relaxing process. It can be a foggy blue, almost into the gray or a soft hint of purple in the blue. Pantone has a "nonchalance" palette that includes many soft, calming blues. It boasts of "reassuring colors that coax a feeling of tranquility and relaxation with no suggestion of anxiety in the surroundings."

Next would be to address the fabrics in the house. Plush and soft textures that make you want to cuddle up to are perfect for that calming feeling. Adding blankets and cushy toss pillows to sofas and chairs will do the trick. In the bedroom and bathroom, purchase high thread count for the linens and towels.
